Look on black.
The North South axis.
Gandhinagar. Gujarat.
Built in sand stone in Indo-Islamic architectural style in1499 by the muslim king Mohammed Begda, the Adalaj stepwell is five stories deep. It is octagonal (8-sided polygon) in plan at the top, built on intricately carved large number of pillars. It was dug deep to access ground water at that level, accounting for seasonal fluctuations in water level due to rainfall over the year.
Built along a North-South axis, entrance is from the South, three staircases are from the South, West and East directions leading to the landing, which is on the northern side of the well.
The structural system is typically Indian style with traditional horizontal beams and lintels. At the bottom of the well is a square stepped floor in the shape of a funnel extending to the lowest plane. This is chiseled into a circular well. | | Scott Norsworthy posted a photo:

In 1962, Indian architect Balkrishna Doshi invited Louis Kahn, one of the most influential architects of 20th century, to design the building for the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Ahmedabad.
It was to comprise a main building with teaching areas, a library and faculty offices around the main courtyard, separate dormitory units for the students that were to be interconnected with a series of arched passages, and houses for the faculty and staff.
Kahn’s presence in the 1960s signals a turning point in contemporary architecture in post-independent India. When designing the school, Kahn put into question how and where people learn. Learning was not happening strictly in classrooms, but in the corridors and the spaces in between as well.
It was in his uncompromising approach to rethinking the fundamentals of architecture that young Indian architects found in Kahn. Through his massive yet austere brick forms, Kahn offered these architects a spiritual experience that made them believe they could effectively build the new nation and achieve a balance between modernity and tradition. Built between 1962 and 1964, the IIMA complex now sits on a 60-acre campus.

More commonly known as Ahmedabad ni Gufa, this underground art gallery depicts the work of famous Indian painter M.F. Hussain, within an architectural work of B.K. Doshi.
Doshi, more famous for his work on Indian Corbusian projects, including those at Chandigarh and several residential projects in Ahmedabad, still runs his practice in Ahmedabad.
This unique project is built using simple, traditional methods and hand tools, by unskilled workers, yet was conceived in 3D using Computer-Aided Design software. | | Senderismo Sermar posted a photo:
